STEAM: Morning Toy Making and Afternoon Outdoor Traveling Dungeons & Dragons (Rising Grades 4–5)
Location: Waynflete (360 Spring Street)
Full Day
8:30 a.m.–3:15 p.m.
This week each toy we create will be a fun physics lesson in disguise! Hands-on projects engage campers on many levels: seeing, hearing, and playing with our subject matter while we have light-hearted conversations about what’s happening scientifically. Building dynamos will teach us about electromagnetic concepts. The result is readily accessible, and kids love the tangible, entertaining result. There will be puppets—specially designed, jointed puppets that move, wiggle, with functioning parts that operate with rubber bands. The creatures we make and decorate demonstrate structural, mechanical, and potential energy concepts. A group project requiring teamwork will be an opportunity to design our own game from the ground up and test it out. Science is fun when it involves making extraordinary things!
In the afternoons, our group will travel out and about to local spots to enjoy the Maine summertime while we learn the rules and tools for playing Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). D&D language and complexity will be simplified and intentionally redesigned for younger players but the imaginative storytelling fun of the campaign will not be diminished. Bus transportation is included.
